Green Grass Blue Sky

Green Grass Blue Sky

Sincerest apologies to any of you who have had trouble with this pattern which appeared in the 2008 Crochet a Day Calendar (the stitch counts were especially off). Apparently, as a pattern writer, I'm not so smart :(

This pattern also makes a lovely hat when crocheted in worsted weight yarn, with the addition of a few extra rounds at the end to lengthen the brim (pictures in the 2008 gallery).

Errata:
To simplify things, I've re-written the pattern in its entirety below.

Yarn: Lionbrand 1 Skein Lionbrand Woolease Thick and Quick, Grass
1 Skein Lionbrand Woolease Thick and Quick, Sky Blue
1 Size K (6.5 mm) crochet hook

Gauge: 4”x 4”(10cm x10cm) = 9 stitches x 9 rows

Tie the ends of 1 strand of B and G together

With color G: Ch4, slip together to form loop.

R1: with color G, sc 6 stitches in the loop, also wrapping around the blue yarn

R2: Alternating one G and one B stitch: 2 sc in each sc =12sts

R3: same as round 2 = 24sts

R4: 1B sc in next st * 2sc in next st (1G, 1B) from * around; end = 36 sts

R5: sc in each stitch around following the 1G, 2 B pattern around =36 sts

Each G sts should fall on a G loop offset from the G st below. At this point you should have the beginning of 12 green "spokes, or grassy stalks" on a blue background. As you work around your spiral, you will be building up upon these stalks. You may need to make adjustments (such as skipping, or decreasing a stitch by working two together) at the beginning of rounds to maintain the pattern seamlessly throughout.

R6: repeat row 5 = 36

R7: Alternating one G and three B stitches: (2sc in nxt st, 1sc in each of nxt 2 sts) around = 48

R8: Alternating one G and four B stitches: (2sc in nxt st, 1 sc in each of nxt 3 sts) around. Total sts = 60

R9: Alternating one G and four B stitches: sc in each st around ( no increases) = 60

R10: Alternating one G and five B stitches: (2c in nxt st, 1 sc in each of nxt 4 sts) around=72
R11, 13, 15: Alternating one G and five B stiches: sc in each sc around.

R12, 14, 16: Alternating four G and two B stitches: sc in each st around.

R17: working only with B; sc in each st around.

R 18: working only with G; sc in each st around.

R19: Alternating 2G sts and 2 Bsts; sc in each st around= 72

R20: Working only with G: sc in each of next 6 st, dec) around =62

For Basket: Bind off. Cut thread, weave in ends.

For Hat: continue working either in sc or dc rounds for approx. one more inch, or length desired for brim.
